residence occupies three typical Chicago lots. The house sits comfortably
within a generous landscape, designed for lounging, gardening, and lawn
space. Indoor spaces are organized around a central courtyard that acts as
the heart of the home. This outdoor space extends to the side yard, where the
courtyard unfolds into a pool set within lush greenery.
Two primary volumes on the second floor anchor the house on the east and
west edges, each maintaining visual connections to the courtyard. To the
west, an elevated family room creates a prominent gathering space. A balcony
extends from this space which captures eastern views and morning light. On
the east, an art studio provides a quieter counterpoint, reflecting the clients’
creative interests. A roof deck extends from the studio, offering western,
sunset views and a different perspective of the courtyard.
Designed for retired clients, the home prioritizes long-term comfort and
accessibility. The layout supports aging in place, featuring a primary suite
on the second floor and a secondary suite on the first floor that can function
as an in-law suite. Throughout the house, subtle level changes and carefully
considered circulation support mobility and long-term functionality.
