This adaptive re-use project gives new life to a brick and timber building, mixing the classic Chicago charm with updated functionality. The base of the facade will have new metal cladding that both creates larger windows for the ground floor space, while its finer details appeal to the scale of the sidewalk and neighborhood. The three levels above will be reconfigured for residential use with 16 units of various sizes.

The original window dimensions have been preserved to maintain the character of the brick façade and bring in abundant natural light deep into the floor plates. The challenge of providing enough parking for an existing building requires a new ramp to the basement, intertwined with an egress path that is structurally complicated, but spatially straightforward and efficient. Crowning the structure, a rooftop garden offers a unique space as a contrast and a compliment to its urban setting.
